Week of April 3, 2023

You made it!  Enjoy the weekend and beautiful Spring weather.  Shout out this week to our fabulous Assistant Principals at Lee Elementary.  We are lucky at Lee to have their expertise, skills, and hearts.  I feel like one VERY  blessed Principal having these two on Team Lee.

DID YOU KNOW:
  • Levi Todd Whitthorne arrived on March 29 at 6:27PM weighing in at 8 pounds 4 ounces?  He and Lauren are happy and healthy.  Congratulations!
  • audits from the district level will continue to evaluate if staff are wearing their badges and closing all exterior doors?  We must have 100% compliance for the safety and security of all of us.
  • all flex hour submissions have been approved, thus far by campus administration in Power School? Please make sure to submit before your summative meeting.
  • we need all classroom designers to check learner bus tags on backpacks?  If you cannot see/read their bus number anymore, please re-write it with sharpie.  If it has fallen off, please add another one.
  • the Shatterproof Course in Power School is due by April 30?
  • employee child transfers will open up on April 1?  Watch for the email coming from CISD so you don't miss the deadlines.
  • all first floor windows will have bullet resistant film by the end of the year?  Right now only the door entries do.  Exterior classroom windows will be covered, next.

SPECIAL THANK YOU
A special thank you to this year's interview team: Layne, Leigh Ann, Angel, Angela, Jessica, Bethany, Kaitlin, Laura, Cassie and Samira  They will be helping at Saturday's Job Fair and throughout hiring season. We appreciate their help finding new FamiLEE members for next year.  Please do not put them in an awkward position and ask them about interviews and positions as they have signed confidentiality forms.

PARAPROFESSIONAL APPRECIATION DAY
It takes our whole team to make a difference with our learners.  We are so lucky to have a fabulous paraprofessional team here at Lee!  WE NEED YOU!  Thank you to each of these ladies for the time and commitment they provide our school.  Your hard work is noticed and valued!

COLLEGE SHIRT DAY
All learners are encouraged to participate in wearing a college shirt on the first Wednesday of each month.  I will certainly be sporting my Florida Atlantic University gear.

NO SCHOOL
There will be no school on Friday, April 7 and Monday, April 10 for all learners.

PTO BOARD FOR 2023-2024
Are you interested in joining the PTO Board for the 2023-24 school year? We have roles that will be a great fit for you, no matter how much or how little time you have to give. Click here to show interest. Details about each of the positions can be found in our Bylaws.  Deadline to submit: April 2, 2023

SPRING CONFERENCES
You will want to begin planning for your Spring Conferences starting now.  Please give due diligence to make contact with all parents to review their learner's data and goal setting.  Keep documentation of parents who do/do not attend conferences.  During your time together, I would encourage you to listen for in case a parent would like to make a change in house for the 2023-2024 school year, wants specialized testing, or is considering retention.  Please write these requests down and EMAIL them to Chantel, Leigh Ann, and Angel.  This makes sure that we have a second layer of accountability as we transition to the next school year.  In addition, remind parents that we DO NOT take requests for house colors or designers and we do our best to have siblings in the same house, but cannot always guarantee it.  We do our very BEST to keep as many learners in their house when we loop up, but we sometimes have to move learners when balancing our building each year.  Parents WILL be notified by campus administration before Meet the Designer Night, if their learner is being moved.  Please ask me if you have any questions!!!

SAVE THE DATE
Our next PTO Spirit Night is coming up in two weeks.  We hope to see everyone there.

FROM YOUR DLC
Designing lessons for creativity and choice is an essential component of today’s learning environment. With that in mind, we would like to share this SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW CHOICE BOARD, adapted from John Meehan's EDRenaline Rush Blog. It includes challenges such as Instagram Influencer, Creative Coder, and more.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK
Use cooperative learning strategies. Lecture style teaching excludes EBs from the learning in a classroom We don’t want to relegate EBs to the fringes of the classroom doing a separate lesson with a classroom aide. Working in small groups is especially beneficial to EBs who have an authentic reason to use academic vocabulary and real reasons to discuss key concepts. EBs benefit from cooperative learning structures. Give students a job in a group. Monitor that they are participating.

LEE LIFE PRINCIPLE:
Curiosity- the eager desire to learn, to explore, to investigate

LESSON IN LEADERSHIP:
Learn and inquire about things that interest you.

LEE QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it, and turn it inside out." -Anonymous

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK
Modify vocabulary instruction for EBs. English language learners require direct instruction of new vocabulary. Teachers should also provide practice in pronouncing new words. ELLs need much more exposure to new terms, words, idioms, and phrases than do English fluent peers. Teachers need to tie new vocabulary to prior learning and use visuals to reinforce meaning. Content area teachers should teach new vocabulary words that occur in the text as well as those related to the subject matter. Word wall should be used at all grade levels.

DID YOU KNOW:

OPEN HOUSE
Thank you for ALL of your preparations.  The building is looking SO ALIVE!  If you have learners of staff members, please give them time after school or before Open House starts to be a parent and see their work.  Please plan to be in your spaces, READY, for our guests who will be here promptly at 5:30.  A reminder email will go to all parents at 9:00 reminding them of the Art Show and time.

COLOR RUN
Color Run shirts should not be sent home and learners will change into them before going to Speicals on Color Run Day.  Please permit learners to change if they want to change out of their Color Run t-shirt.  The powder used is non-toxic and washes off with plain water, so don't panic. Thank you, designers, for staying with your house and helping with safety during the run portion of Specials.  Thank you support staff for assisting, too.  We can't wait to find out which classes get $50 of supplies from PTO.  Have FUN! I will be out as much as I can.  We will announce when Sonic drinks are here.

COACHES CORNER

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK
Determine key concepts for the unit and define language and content objects for each lesson. Teachers write the key concept for a unit of study in student-friendly language and post it in the room. New learning should be tied to this concept. Additionally, teachers should begin each lesson by writing a content objective on the board. At the end of the lesson, students should be asked if the objective was met. Classroom teachers also need to set language objectives for the ELLs in their class. A language objective might be to learn new vocabulary, find the nouns in a lesson, or apply a grammar rule.

Week of March 6, 2023

You made it!  One more week until Spring Break!!!  Thank you for all you are doing to get your learning spaces set up for Open House.  It is a HUGE deal to have parents in the building and there is so much learning to showcase.  Please make sure all extra furniture is moved out of your spaces and that collabs are as organized as your learning spaces.  We've GOT THIS!

DID YOU KNOW:
  • today is our student teacher, Mitzi's last day?  She has been working in Practical Academics.  Please wish her well if you see her.

  • you are welcome to help build bikes on Friday, after school?  Ask Coach Hall if you would like more information or just join us in the gym.

  • If you have a learner who is in RtI, they can use Learning Ally.  Melissa has offered to put them in for us, so please make sure to fill out this form completely.  Please remember this form is only for learners in Reading RtI and their data should be documented in Panorama.  Learning Ally Google Form

  • Did you know blood loss is the leading cause of death after injury?  This could happen to anyone anywhere.  Chantel and Nurse Annah would like to make sure that everyone feels prepared and has the opportunity to take the Stop the Bleed course this year for one hour of flex credit.
Just watch the video at your convenience, check off really quick on the skills in the clinic with Nurse Annah during any of your free time, and enter your hour of flex credit in Powerschool.
You, too, can be a hero.

NATIONAL SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK

It’s no secret that eating a nutritious breakfast helps our learners start the school day off right!  Next week, March 6-10, is National School Breakfast Week.  All week long our cafeterias will be featuring a new menu item.  This year’s theme is “Dig Into School Breakfast."

SCHOOL PICTURE DAY
Monday is staff and class picture day.  Please plan to be here by 7:10 for our staff photograph in the cafeteria.  Immediately after arrival, we will start calling your classes down for class and individual pictures.  It is imperative you drop what you are doing and hustle down, so we can try to get learners through before PE or recess. Please line your learners up from shortest to tallest before coming down.  Lastly, remember that lunch is in your spaces, this day, as the photographers will need the entire cafeteria.

PTO MEETING
I will send an email to parents through Parent Square with a Zoom Link on Tuesday morning.  Please advertise in your weekly newsletter.  We will have a visit from Dr. Balarin from CMSW and a Bond Presentation.

AUTHOR VISIT
On Wednesday, we will host an author visit for all grades.  To facilitate our guest, we will operate on a GRADE LEVEL schedule on this day.  Thank you for being at your presentations on time and for ensuring that we continue to transition using HALL so that our visit is uninterrupted.

LEE COLOR RUN
FamiLEEs can donate funds here, and the color run will take place on Thursday.   We will work on a  DAY 4 NO TEAM TIME schedule this day.  You all are doing an awesome job of hyping Color Run up and earning money for our school.  If you plan to participate with your learners, beware that the color can get on your shoes- we don't want you wearing your faves.  T-shirts will be delivered for you and your learners as soon as they arrive.  I'm fine if you wear joggers.  WE APPRECIATE YOU!

Also, PTO will gift the top designer in each house $50 in classroom supplies (of their choice) from Amazon (PTO will order on their behalf).
PTO will provide Sonic drinks for the entire staff on Color Run Day.

OPEN HOUSE
We are excited to host Open House on Thursday.  Front and rear doors will be unlocked for entrance at 5:30.  This is a "come and go" event so parents can stay as long as they like.  Don't forget to invite parents to stop by the cafeteria to see the beautiful artwork our learners have created.  FamiLEEs can purchase artwork and take it home.  All proceeds from the Art Show go back to our Art program.  Please plan to dress professionally for Open House.

SPIRIT RALLY
We will wrap up the 9 weeks with our Spirit Rally on Friday.  We will follow a Day 5 NO TEAM TIME Schedule.  Since staff members could be "colored," we will host our Spirit Rally the last hour of the day.  During Spirit Rally we will also announce the winners of the Yearbook Contest.

CISD JOB FAIR
Are you interested in being on our campus interview team this year?  It is a wonderful time to get to know new people and share about our school with future candidates.  If you would like to join us, you need to attend annual training (less than 30 mins).  Please sign up here, if interested.  When you join us at the Job Fair on April 1, Babes lunch will be provided by CISD.
