Week of February 27, 2023

Hi team!  I will miss being on campus on Thursday and Friday.  I will not have access to technology while at Crucial Conversations training, but will check Teams/texts on my phone.  I wanted to share some thoughts I had from our Professional Learning day last Friday.  First, I want to thank you for your professionalism.  Thank you for representing our campus well and demonstrating the growth mindset you have.  I can bet you came away with new learning from the day, and that is because you constantly strive to give our Spurs the BEST learning experiences.  It is clear to me that Lee staff is well on their small group and formative assessment journey.  EVERY one of you should feel affirmed that you are doing excellent work on our campus and district goal.  THANK YOU!  You are appreciated!

Week of February 20, 2023

Tomorrow will be a busy day of learning.  Please review the email from Nancy Garvey so you know where to be.  A friendly reminder that you are an ambassador of Lee Elementary, so please show everyone your growth mindset and remember to wear jeans, not warm ups. Thank you to the Spurs that are serving on panels tomorrow- you make us look SO GOOD!  ENJOY the three day weekend!  I hope you and your family enjoy special time together.

DID YOU KNOW:
  • if you have learners who want to still shop the book fair that they can shop online through February 22?  Here is the link to do so.
  • the district is vigilantly sending phishing emails disguised as ones from Principals?  I will never email you that I need help or that you can help me by sending gift cards.  Pay attention to the return address on these sketchy emails and please report them as phishing so you don't have to do extra technology training.
  • that CISD Transfers will open up on 2/27/23?  Please remember to talk to me before placing your name on the district transfer list.  Directions will be emailed from HR next week.
  • since every space in our building does not have a working phone, the office will call you through TEAMS if they need a learner from your classroom?  Please have Teams set up on your iPad so that they can contact you.  Parents get impatient when they are here to pick up their learners.  We want you to have healthy work-life balance so read the DLC Update for ways to manage Teams and notifications so you are not bothered after hours.
  • CK will be at Crucial Conversations training next Thursday and Friday, so she will be off campus these two days?

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK
Believe in your student and yourself. Set high expectations but give accommodations to level the linguistic playing field. Remember that a person who is cognitively capable of learning does not need lower level materials. Your students who are learning English will need linguistic accommodation to have access to the same grade level standards that all other students have access to. Accommodations may include adapted texts, visuals (lots of visuals), support in native language (bilingual dictionaries), gestures, word banks, sentence frames, opportunities to hear peers and speak with peers using academic language, etc.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK

Stop for Checkpoints with Feedback. Formatively assessing during lessons helps us to form the next steps in instruction. Think of formative assessment (checkpoints) as a thermometer. We take the temperature and then based on the results, we adjust the thermostat (instruction) and provide feedback to students. On the other hand, if we rarely stop to check on students’ understanding, we might go for hours or days not realizing that students have missed key understandings. Large gaps may form and by this time it becomes difficult to re-route the learning that has solidified.
