Week of January 3, 2022

We hope you have enjoyed our Charlie Brown themed December to Remember.  Have a REMARKABLE TWO WEEKS away from work, sweet staff.  We wish you nothing short of the most safe, memorable, and restful break and can't wait to hear about your time away from school!

Congratulations to  Emma and Rachel!  These first year teachers have done an incredible job with their first classes/roles of their own.  With their drive and determination and the help of their mentors, teams, our coaches, and houses they do not look or behave like beginning educators.  Kudos to this year's new hires: Vanessa, Amy, Maria, and Mary.  You have made it to Christmas!  We are so proud of each of you and the journey you are on with us.  Thank you, returning staff, for pouring into our newest FamiLEE members the first two nine weeks and helping them along the way!  I am a proud principal who is blessed to have a staff that I trust and that "gets" the vision of Lee.  Each of you are a huge part in actualizing our guiding purpose.  THANK YOU for loving our school, loving our children, loving each other, and loving ME! Leadership Team...WOW!  Thank you for being the voice for your grades and houses.  Thank you for the support you have given our Admin Team and campus, this year.  You continue to grow in immeasurable ways.  Please have the BEST last FULL day of 2021 with our children.

DID YOU KNOW:
  • letters for CoGAT and NNAT results go home on THURSDAY?  Please send these in backpacks.  They will be on your design studio desks.
  • we have flood money to spend on furniture for the building?  If you have a passion for helping to serve on a campus furniture committee, please email CK before you leave for Winter Break.
  • you can set up your automatic replies before you leave for Winter Break?  Please make time to go in and set this up before leaving on Friday so you can disconnect for the two weeks.
  • the Board approved calendars for the next two years?  You can read more, here
  • you only have a few more weeks to get your Go Red shirt?  For a link to order your Go Red t-shirt (credit card only) and show your support during the Month of Mondays in February - American Heart Month.  Click here for a link to order your Go Red t-shirt (credit card only) and text DHCCOPPELL to 41444.

MOVIE TIME AND PARTY DAY
Please half your houses and start the movie at 12:15.  This will make sure we conclude right at PARTY TIME!  Parents can set up in enclosed classrooms for the parties until your movies end.  Admin will drop off staff "movie boxes" for December to Remember this morning and then will deliver popcorn and cups by noon.  Thank you to PTO for providing the REAL movie popcorn and to Leigh Ann and Shanna for picking it ALL up today.

BEFORE LEAVING ON FRIDAY
  1. Please get any items form the fridge by 10:30.  The office will be tossing anything "suspect."
  2. Please, also visit your mailbox before noon.  Empty it of all contents. There may be many thank you notes in there. Please make sure these get in learner backpacks.
  3. Custodial does a deep cleaning of the campus these next two weeks.  May I suggest a FRESH START?  I ask that you erase as much as you can on your dry erase boards and clean off your counters of clutter so that your room gets cleaned as much as possible.  PLEASE take down, send home, and store any holiday displays and decorations before leaving.
  4. If you have pets, please take them home with you.  Pets are not permitted to stay on campus these two weeks.
  5. Make sure all projectors, computers, digital signage and tv's are turned off before leaving.  This includes your Vivatek boards.
  6. Shared MacBooks should be plugged in and charging in carts.

PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPOTUNITY
Did you know that we have the second highest book circulation in all of CISD?  We need parent volunteers to help shelve books in our media center so that our learners can find what they want to read.  Sign up here!

504 UPDATE FROM LEIGH ANN`
Accommodations specified on a 504 services plan must be documented by the educator in some way.  There is no specific rule that requires the accommodation to be documented in a certain way- rather each educator has the flexibility to set up a system that works best for them.  It is reasonable for a parent, OCR and/or TEA to require proof that an accommodation, per the services plan, was in fact provided.  A verbal response that the accommodation was provided will not satisfy OCR or TEA.  If you have a 504 learner, please complete this Google form as a way to document the accommodations are being provided.

JANUARY 4
This day is a scheduled work day for you.  Please plan to be on campus from 8:00-3:30 and work on what YOU need to work on to be ready for the next grading period.  You may dress comfortably and you can leave for a one hour lunch.

REMINDERS
Don't forget that grades are due January 5th.  Please go into e-school, today, to make sure you are able to enter grades, have all of your learners, etc. so that if Leigh Ann needs to correct anything, it can be done before the holiday.  Also, if you enter grades on Tuesday (our work day), please remember that they must be back-dated to a date before December 17th, or they will not save.

iOS15 UPDATE
Please let learners know that they need to update their devices when the red screen comes up on their device over the break.  Staff, this includes you, as well.

COLLEGE SHIRT DAY
Encourage learners to participate the first Wednesday of each month.

REVISITING RESPECT AGREEMENTS
Please create new or revisit respect agreements with your classes for the 3rd 9 weeks.  Remember there should be FOUR quadrants: Learner to Learner, Learner to Designer, Designer to Learner, and Learner to School.  All four quadrants should have 3 to 4 bullets with short phrases (ex: be honest, hands to self, feet off furniture, etc.). Please share updated agreements with Admin so we can update our binder.  We use these when learners come down with behavior reflections.

CAMPUS GOAL
Part of our campus goal is digital citizenship.  Please review the CISD Learner Digital Orientation Lesson in Schoology for the third time this year.  It is imperative we review responsible use for technology and digital footprint.  Learners should NEVER erase their history.  Learners should also not download apps from Manager without your permission.  REMIND THEM OF THIS- Admin and Designers should be checking this periodically to help learners with accountability. With the new iOS15 update to iPads, learners will be able to delete apps.  After teaching the review lesson, have learners sign a new Digital Citizenship agreement/poster and post it by your respect agreement. This is required and helps Admin when we visit with learners who make poor technology choices.

#ONEWORD2022
Since opening year, we, as a staff, have come back in January and had a word for the year.  Just one word.  My first word was INSPIRE, then LEAD, followed by GRATITUDE, KIND, LISTEN, GRACE etc.  This year my word is still being decided upon. Your word can be something tangible or intangible.  It can be a thought, a feeling, or an action.  The key is to find something that has personal meaning for you.  This word may not make sense to anyone but you, and that is okay.  This is YOUR word!  This little word can have big meaning in your life if you allow yourself to be open to the possibilities.  Sometimes a word will pop into your brain, and it will not make any sense to your right now.  Give it some time.  Let it percolate a bit.  Maybe this is a word you need to hear, but just aren't ready for it yet.  Again, be open to the possibilities.  Between now and our first
Wednesday's staff meeting, please determine what your #oneword2022 will be.  We will have an activity to go along with your word, so come prepared with yours.

COACH'S CORNER

Dear Friends,

I hope that all of you have a wonderful break.  Take time to relax and connect with your family and friends. I want to thank all of you for the wonderful texts and emails about my graduation. I have learnt so much from the program and I know I have learnt from so many of you as part of my research and assignments. Thank you for being part of my learning experience.

I am planning to fly out on Friday to Lahore, Pakistan. So look out for those tire marks ;) Super excited about the LONG flight (not), meeting my friends, doing touristy things and shopping. I hope all of you spend your time doing things you LOVE.

Can’t wait to catch up with y’all after the break and learn about your ONE WORD!

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year!! May 2022 bring us joy and peace.

Love,

Samira

Save the Date!

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK
Embrace and lift up cultural differences
We all have culture. Let’s just get that out there. The thing is that when there are differences in culture we have the choice to ignore them, embrace them or ridicule them. Many people think that ignoring cultural differences is just fine. Actually, it’s not. Cultural blindness is “acting as if cultural differences do not matter” and thinking that everyone learns the same. Our job is to embrace differences and create opportunities to learn from one another. Recognizing that each student brings with him/her unique and valuable assets that can enrich the classroom and tapping into those resources will lift up students.

Week of December 13, 2021

Thank you for the #HourOfCode activities you planned and shared with your learners this week. I am blown away by the problem solving skills of our children. This is because of YOU!  I hope you enjoyed our fabulous visit from Todd Whitthorne!  I wonder if you have revisited the thought about being a participant not a spectator?  Have you thought about what your "flow" is?  What about practicing ALF and giving yourself "at least five" minutes each day?  YOU ARE WORTH IT.  Please have the BEST final week of school for 2021.  Remember that you CHOSE this profession.  It has been such a treat to celebrate each of you during December to Remember, and we hope that you know how very much you mean to the school community and me!

COACH'S CORNER

Last week, you may have reflected on your year, you might have started to come up with your One Word for the year. It is so hard to keep up with resolutions and I have always felt your One Word keeps you grounded. Create a graphic and keep it visible in your space at home or at work. Here’s an example. I printed out the word on cardstock, used some stickers and carefully tore around it. I have glued it in my weekly planner and use it as my desktop background at home.

Have a wonderful break, disconnect from work and enjoy time with your family and friends.

Please use this link to book a time with me so we can collaborate.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK

Offer wait time

So S.I.M.P.L.E. you don’t even have to plan for it. But you have to remember to do it. Offering wait time means that you ask a question. And then you WAIT before you call on anyone to answer. Wait. Wait. Wait. It can be awkward and someone will try to talk. Rather than calling on 1 person to answer…have them share their answers with a partner. This way EVERYONE answers rather than 1 single person. Win, WIN! Why wait? Well, many reasons…but to begin with some of our ELs are processing and translating English into their native language. Wait time gives them a chance to do the hard work and then build the courage to answer in English too!

Week of December 6, 2021

We hope you are looking forward to another week of Peanuts activities for December to Remember.  We have SO MUCH FUN planning out ways to show you how much we love you!  We try to be mindful not to take too much of your time, not to always have food, and to keep our crafts on the easy side.  If you didn't make it to the lounge for any "projects" or want extras to do with your family at home, we always have plenty of left overs. Just let us know!!  You blew us away with your ornaments and our tree looks AMAZING.  Thanks for making this a December to Remember for your learners as well!

Large rockers should be arriving after the break.
  • there is a place to give CISD feedback for the calendar for the next two years? Exercise your voice, and go here and rank your favorites by Friday.

You can also have learners send letters digitally by clicking here.  Feel free to use the hashtag #MacysBelieve to promote this event.

COACH'S CORNER

I love this time of the year. There is so much love and appreciation in the air. I look forward to getting myself reorganized and enjoy reflecting on my purpose. I encourage you to be creative and find 21 good things that happened in 2021 that you are grateful for. Here is my example from last year. I just used keynote and its shapes. I made arrows in markup.

Or you can be super creative and artistic like the girl (Helen Wang) who inspired me :)

Please use this link to book a time with me so we can collaborate.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK

Embed speaking opportunities

Talk is CRUCIAL for our ELs. We must provide (not require) opportunities for them to discuss with a group or partner so they can negotiate for meaning, hear another’s point of view, process thinking, dig deeper, learn new vocabulary, and practice language in a low stress setting. The best way to do this is to scaffold for success. Model what you want to see and hear EXPLICITLY, give them sentence frames and vocabulary and post the question that they will discuss so they can go back to it if they forget.

Week of November 29, 2021

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I am reflecting about they many blessings at our school.  Every one of you are a blessing to me in your own unique ways.  You are not taken for granted and are appreciated beyond measure.  Each of you choose to come to Lee and work so hard, daily, to bring our school building to life for our learners.  Your passion for learning, your flexibility and your heart shines in all you do.  This year, I have learned how to grow and lead with additional grace and patience. I see that demonstrated in so many of you, too!  Please REST over the break.  DO NOT WORK OR THINK ABOUT SCHOOL!!  Take time for yourself and reflect on how incredible you are.  I cannot wait to show you how much we care during December to Remember.  When you return it will be here!

DID YOU KNOW:
  • we want you to take care of your self and also help meet our campus SEL goal? Why not wear warm ups on Friday and "trot the track" during your break? We can call this our Lee Turkey Trot! Please only wear warm ups if you plan to take part in this self-care activity.
  • that we were charged $175 for color copies for the month of October?? We cannot sustain this as a campus. PLEASE only print color copies for items being displayed on bulletin boards.
  • today is Substitute Appreciation Day? Please be intentional in thanking any subs in our building today!
  • we will clean the lounge fridge out at 2:00, tomorrow. Please take your personal items and food home.
  • some classrooms still need to have their learners vote on their movie preference for our school-wide field trip?
  • the district will Go Red for staff wellness the month of February? Click here for a link to order your Go Red t-shirt (credit card only) and show your support during the Month of Mondays in February - American Heart Month - text DHCCOPPELL to 41444.

NEW PRACTICE IN PLACE
Please let parents know that when learners are absent, parents need to send in a note with the student's firs and last name, what class their learner is in, and the date(s) and reason for the absence.  For the first time, we can accept emails with this information.  Parents can send emails to vtan@coppellisd.com.

WEDNESDAY IS COLLEGE SHIRT DAY

FLEX LEARNING WEDNESDAY
Please plan to attend one of these incredible sessions on Wednesday.  We will start at 3:30 so that we can enjoy Natalie's Bridal Shower beforehand.  Thank you, Social Spurs, for planning the shower and to our presenters for growing our minds.

SPECIAL EDUCATION DAY
Thursday is National Special Education Day.  In addition to our general education special education learners and staff, we are blessed to have two specialized special education programs here at Lee: Active Learning and Practical Academics.  Please take time to celebrate the accomplishments of our special needs learners, their designers, our paraprofessionals and their parents for the incredible jobs they do!!!  If you want to learn more about special education, our two programs, or your class would benefit from a lesson on inclusivity and learners in these programs at Lee, our teachers are awesome resources!

CHS MADRIGAL TOUR
The Madrigal group will be caroling through Lee on Friday.  I still do not know what time they will arrive.  Due to the last minute communication and timing, they will ease through the downstairs of the building and conclude in the Media Center.  Learners upstairs can gather at the glass walls when they hear them and we will make sure they go through the cafeteria, as well.

DLC UPDATE
Hour of Code is upon us! The week of December 6th through 12th is in recognition of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, a computer science pioneer. Each year we honor her through the Hour of Code. This is a great opportunity for students to be introduced to the idea of coding, where they can use their critical thinking and creativity skills, in about a 45 minute to an hour lesson. The DLCs have created this website for you to use for HOC. Click on the page for your grade level and you will have vocabulary, and a variety of activities that can be used for HOC. The HOC activities will only need student's Ipads, no additional materials needed. As we get closer to the week of HOC, the website will be finalized on December 1st, but we wanted to give a preview before then! Happy coding!!!

COACH'S CORNER

Sharing a few Math resources that you could use for your Number Talks. If you need MATH Mashups or Which One Doesn’t Belong, please let me know.

  • You Cubed-You can filter by grade and topics. They are just short activities that can deepen mathematical understanding.

  • Visual Patterns-A lot of you are working on number patterns. This site gives you images that you can incorporate in your Number Talks.

  • Estimation by Dane Ehlert-Lots of fun estimation activities. You can also get inspired and create your own images. Maybe in upper grades, learners can create one to share with their class.

  • NRICH-Another great resource to build mathematical thinking. If you click on Primary and EY teachers and the manipulatives, it gives you ideas for how to use various tools for mathematical activities.

Can’t wait to see some of these activities in your spaces :) Please use this link to book a time with me so we can collaborate.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK

Intentionally plan for writing

Keeping in mind that writing is not just something students do in writing class or language arts, we must intentionally plan for writing in all content areas. Why? Students need to be able to use the language of science, math, history in their writing and their speaking. One way to plan for writing in content areas is to first begin with open ended speaking activities. Having students hold academic conversations over hot topics using domain specific vocabulary can prepare them for writing. When we let them talk with several partners, they begin to hear multiple responses and can use their peers’ ideas when they begin writing. Some students will need sentence starters to help them begin their writing. Beginner ELs may need paragraph frames, picture supports and a vocabulary word bank. The point is, don’t skip the writing in content area classrooms!
