Week of September 6, 2021

What a delightful week participating in beginning of the year goal setting with some of you.  Leigh Ann and I are impressed with the thoughtful reflection and goal setting ideas you each have, and we look forward to supporting you on your journey. THANK YOU for having the growth mindsets that you do and for continuing to stretch yourselves as professionals- you deserve it and OUR KIDS DESERVE IT!  Please give yourself 60 seconds on Friday to stop what you are doing, pause, and celebrate what you have accomplished so far. We could not be more pleased with the first three and a half weeks of school and what you are part of creating at Lee!!!  Have an incredible L-O-N-G weekend!

DID YOU KNOW:
  • you were expected to upload your Lee Staff Handbook receipt page in our RJL Schoology Course media album by August 31?   If you have not done this, please do.
  • if you are looking for ways to earn flex time that Apple is hosting tons of sessions in September and October?  You can register through this link
  • that Keiko is now a temporary employee of Lee Elementary?  We are so excited that she can now be PAID for some of the work she does with your classrooms and in our outdoor learning garden.  YAY!

CURRICULUM NIGHT
Thank you for working as grade levels on your Curriculum Night presentations.  Please send your presentation AND link to your recording home in this week's newsletter.  Grade leaders, please share your FAQ documents with me.  I will look over for approval and a quick turnaround.  Thank you for lifting language from the CISD COVID -19 Protocols, where possible, in your responses.

SPIRIT WEAR- PLEASE SHARE WITH PARENTS
Every Friday is Spirit Shirt Day at Lee Elementary.  You can order your school spirit wear today! This year the new gray color lets you show off your school spirit no matter what house you are in! https://tshirtsfromtexas.com/leespiritwear/

BUDGET
We are excited that we now have our 2021-2022 budget dollars to order what you need to work with your learners.  Part of my role is to make sure you have the supplies you need to do your job.  Please try to plan ahead so that you do not have to spend personal funds on supplies.  Also, be thinking about items we need to add to house storage closets (like manipulatives, science tools, etc.) and write up a PO and put it in my box.  Remember that it will take a couple of weeks to process, get quotes, and ship.  Please do not turn in a PO unless you have verified that your order is from an approved vendor.

For those of you that already put POs in my box, they will be processed next week.  This week, each house will be getting 14 large and 14 small rockers that we purchased with last year's budget.  If you have "extra" furniture you need removed from your house, get with Leigh Ann.  We have some classrooms that could use your "extras."

STAFF DRESS CODE
Remember that jeans are only permitted on Spirit Days such as Ed Foundation Tuesdays, Spirit Wednesdays and  Spirit Fridays.  Please do not wear jeans on other days and make sure you refer to the blog or campus calendar for the appropriate shirts.

SAVE THE DATE
This week you will get an email from Samira and Ayesha who are taking the lead with LEEdership Council this year.  Please share this graphic and the information in their email with your parents.

RESPECT AGREEMENTS
Please email a photo of your respect agreement to Leigh Ann so that she can put it in the office Discipline Binder.  We will refer to your respect agreements when learners have behavior reflections.

RED AND BLACK SUPERSTAR NOMINATIONS

Nominations are being accepted until September 27 for the first round of the school year.  As a reminder, at the elementary level, 1 learner per grade and 2 staff members will be recognized. Each winner will receive a Super Star T-shirt, a certificate, and an eraser or stylus.  If a nominee is not chosen, they will receive a certificate with their nomination verbiage included.  Nominations will occur every nine weeks.  The Super Star program is designed to give parents and CISD staff an opportunity to recognize the dedicated and hardworking students, teachers, administrators and support staff within the district.  To submit a nomination please click on this link: Super Star Nomination Form (google.com)

COACH'S CORNER

Instructional Strategy | Movement | Choose and Chat

 Instructions:

  1. Students CHOOSE their response to a question:

    1. choose from multiple choice answers

    2. choose a response symbol like plus (know it), check (know parts), minus (confused)

    3. choose a nonverbal response like thumbs up, sideways, or down

  2. Students mingle while music plays, then get a partner when the music stops.

  3. Students CHAT with their partner justifying their response, symbol, or hand signal and help each other better understand the content.

  4. Teacher sees and hears the students’ thinking and clarifies/verifies as appropriate.

Helpful Hints:

  • Role play appropriate mingling and ensure every student has a partner.

  • Allow students to preview the question/task, think through a response with a supportive adult, and use thinking stems to frame response.

Materials:

  • appropriate music

  • question(s) prepared for which students will choose a response

Let me know how it goes.  Please use this link to book a time with me so we can collaborate.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK

Newcomer Parent Support

Parents of newcomers often lack participation in their child’s school, but it does not mean they are not interested. In fact, families from many other parts of the world hold teachers in such a high regard that they do not interfere. Here are some ways you can involve families:

  • After sending important announcements, give them a call to answer any questions (interpreters are available).

  • Invite older students from the same cultural background to be mentors for families of newcomers.

  • Invite families to share their native culture.

  • Be an advocate for them.

  • Help them feel comfortable and welcomed to the U.S.

Please reach out to your LAS (Language Acquisition Specialist) for any help.
