Week of October 2, 2017

What a fantastic week!  The vertical and across house lessons happening are IMPRESSIVE and the science efforts from ALL is HUGELY APPRECIATED AND ACKNOWLEDGED!  Our kids LOVE learning with you!  I hope you took advantage of our cancelled staff meeting on Wednesday and did something for YOURSELF!

What an amazing turn out for our Grandparent and Special Friend Event today.  Thank you LeighAnn for our communication documents and to Ashley for our photo opportunity.  The office did a wonderful job of greeting everyone and making them feel right at home!  The cafeteria staff handled our large number of visitors and WE SURVIVED! :)

We have had a hugely successful Fall Book Fair this week- that means more books for our library! Thank you to Melinda, Candace, and our PTO moms for organizing it.  Thank you to all of the open space designers for handling the extra volume and for everyone being flexible with learners going down to shop.

Lastly, thank you for hyping up the end of our Helping Hands for Harvey fundraising.  It is because of each of you that we have raised so many funds!!

DID YOU KNOW:
  • the State Fair of Texas opens tomorrow?  You will get your Designer and Learner State Fair tickets in your box on Friday.  PLEASE send these home with learners, on Friday, in a secure way so that they do not get lost.  Not using your staff ticket? Return it to Deepa.  She will add it to the extras.  If you want an extra adult ticket, email her and she can get you one on a first come, first serve basis.  Check out State Fair of Texas foods to see what they have in store for you this year!
  • you and your learners can still shop the Book Fair VIRTUALLY? Click here until 10/12 and books will ship to Lee for FREE.
  • that "Dyslexia affects up to 1 in 5 people, but the experience of dyslexia isn't always the same? This difficulty in processing language exists along a spectrum -- one that doesn't necessarily fit with labels like "normal" and "defective." In this short video, Kelli Sandman-Hurley urges us to think again about dyslexic brain function and to celebrate the neurodiversity of the human brain."
  • if you would like to learn more about ESL that there is a Schoology course? The Schoology code is : 49RBR-6R92G

CUSTODIAL APPRECIATION
Social Spurs will take care of gift cards for our custodians, but your learners may want to create cards or poems during your writing time.  Duc is our daytime custodian and Jose and Jose are the evening ones.

PICTURE DAY
Monday is class picture day.  Photographs will take place in the flex space of the media center.  We request that you come down promptly when our runner gets to you. We will follow the Specials schedule so that learners do not ruin their outfits.  Please allow learners to change clothes if parents request they do so.

BULLYING AWARENESS
October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  CISD is asking that all staff and students wear a blue shirt on MondayOct. 2nd in observance of National Bullying Awareness Day. Thanks for your participation!  (Since it is picture day, learners and staff can change into their blue shirt if they don't want to wear it for pictures)

FED EX DAY
Enjoy your one hour on Wednesday where you learn about a topic of YOUR choice related to YOUR goals, and earn Flex credit for it.  This is a time for learning.  Please post to Today's Meet after 4:30, but before 5:00, on Wednesday, and share what you learned during your time in order to get credit for your hour.  Remember that this time is for professional growth and learning.  Watch your email for sessions we will be hosting.

WEEKLY WALKTHROUGH FOCUS
We will continue giving you feedback on Domain 3.1: Learning Environment, this week.  We will look at both the physical and virtual environment.  We will also be looking at what your learners are doing, what transitions look like, that all subject areas are displayed in anchor charts, that learning objectives are posted, that there is learner work displayed, and that you have CBL evidenced in your space.

GLOBAL READ ALOUD
If you are participating in GLA, please email Ashley so she can keep track of Global Connections.

RED AND BLACK SUPERSTAR PROGRAM
The Coppell Education Foundation is continuing the Red & Black Super Star Program.  This year the awards will be given out on 4 occasions.  The first nomination deadline is October 6th.  Subsequent deadlines are December 8th and March 2nd.  Each winner will receive a Super Star shirt, a certificate and a stylus/pen.  The awards will be presented at an assembly or during announcements.  Students can be nominated by any CISD employee.  CISD employees can be nominated by a parent, a middle-school student or a CISD employee.  More information about the Super Star Program and Link to Nomination Form

MAD HATTER
Designers, please add to newsletters:

It’s that time of year again, Blue1a & Blue3 learners are hosting Mad Hatter Day on Thursday, October 5th this year!

PURPOSE: to help kids suffering from cancer feel comfortable and encourage them to feel better by giving them hats.

Goal: help 250 kids by collecting 250 hats to send to Children’s Medical Center.

When? Bring brand new hats (with tags) Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday (October 2nd-4th). A collection team will come by each house at 8:15 after house announcements. Learners will complete a form to help us collect data.

Reward: Each person who donates a hat will receive a sticker to wear on Thursday AND get to wear a hat all day at school to celebrate Mad Hatter Day, October 5th!

There is a digital poster attached to be included on newsletters/Twitter as well.

(For Designers Only, don’t share with parents: see who made a hat donation here).

FALL CONFERENCE DAY AND HOURLY EMPLOYEES
Please document the parents that you confer with.  It is a best practice to add this to your communication log.  If you are a Paraprofessional or Instructional Aide, please let Ashley know what your plans are for Friday.  If you have 8 hours of comp/flex time, already, you do not need to come in on Friday.  If you are trying to earn more for the week of Thanksgiving, we need people to greet in the front office because Shanna and Deepa will be out and Admin will be at STAAR Training. Comp/flex hours should NOT be greater than 20 at this time.

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK:
Encourage students to read diverse texts- Reading and then thinking and talking about different genres is a robust sequence for learning academic language.

LESSON IN LEADERSHIP:
If you approach a door and someone is following you, hold the door and allow the other person to pass through it first, then you can walk through.
