Week of October 10, 2022

What an incredible staff you are.  I am so impressed that after a long day of work that you were so attentive and eager to learn how to serve our limited and non-English speaking learners.  Thank you Alex and Corinne for taking the lead and showing us best practices and clearing up misconceptions.  I can't wait to see you put into practice what your learned.  Thank you for preparing to host your learner-led conferences.  I know you have all spent a great deal of time preparing with your learners.  What a great time to build connections with your familLEEs.  I want you to know I appreciate all of your hard work to communicate the strengths and areas for growth on each child.  If a parent did not attend the conference on the designated days, please do your best to set up an alternative time/method to review data with them.

DID YOU KNOW

  • your design days are coming up SOON (Nov 1-3) We can't wait to give you half a day of time, as a GRADE, to long range plan together?  I have adjusted the campus calendar with your grade level days so you know when you will have a sub.  These will be HOUSE design days in January.
  • I will be hosting a 30 minute Twitter Chat for Apple tonight at 8:00?  If you are interested in joining, follow #AppleEDULeaderChat at 8:00.  I would love to see you on.  Here are the questions we will discuss:
    • Q1: What are some ways you nurture partnerships with families and extended community?
Q2: Share an example of a successful community partnership.
Q3: In what ways does technology help you partner with families and the extended community?
Q4: What are some outcomes of nurturing partnerships with families and extended community?

REVISITING RESPECT AGREEMENTS
Please revisit and update respect agreements with your classes for the 2nd 9 weeks.  Remember there should be FOUR quadrants: Learner to Learner, Learner to Designer, Designer to Learner, and Learner to School.  All four quadrants should have 3 to 4 bullets with short phrases (ex: be honest, hands to self, feet off furniture, etc.).

MORNING MEETINGS
Class circles are going to help learners (and you) as we maintain relationships.  THEY ARE A REQUIREMENT IN CISD.  They provide social/emotional support in your space.  You should have a structure within the class meeting to foster authentic relationships, provide safety for everyone's voice to be heard and allow vulnerability to occur.  Class meetings build secure relationships in a safe and structured setting.  If you need "talking pieces" please see Angela or Jessica. Ask your learners what they want to use. We are happy to purchase talking pieces for you, if you submit a PO.  Remember that, on October 11, you start your once a week Second Step lessons once a week.

CMSW FEEDER NIGHT
All of us are invited to attend this event at CMSW.  Please respond to the email I forwarded this week if you are interested in attending their tailgate portion.

VIRTUAL PTO MEETING
We have our second VIRTUAL PTO Meeting on Tuesday night at 6:00 pm.  A Zoom link will be emailed to parents through Parent Square.

LEEDERSHIP COUNCIL

Our class will be electing a LEEdership Council representative Wednesday, October 26th, 2022.  This learner will meet with Mrs. Samira Khan throughout the school year during normal hours to develop their leadership skills and voice on campus.

This person must be a strong communicator, confident about sharing their thoughts and ideas, respected by their peers, and be elected. Please discuss this role with your learner to see if they have an interest in campaigning.  If your child does want to run, we’ll refer to him/her as a candidate.  As they "run" for this position, please abide by these guidelines:

  1. Candidates will create a Clips video as a campaign video. Make sure you address:

a.    Who are you?

b.    Why are you the best candidate for this position?

c.    What is your campaign promise? What will you do to make Lee Elementary a better place?

  1. If your child is in 5th grade and was elected in grades Kinder through 2nd, they may run to be a class representative again this year.

Good luck!

May the best candidate win.

WRITE A CHECK
Write a Check starts this week.  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, so it is imperative that you talk up this three week event with our learners so their parents will participate. We will updated you on Morning broadcast with teacher and house leaders.  Our goal is $25,000.

WALKTHROUGHS IN OCTOBER

Don't forget to read feedback and sign off on your first walkthrough.  For this month, we will be giving you feedback on Domain 2.4: Differentiation.  These observations go so well with our campus goal of formative assessment and small group instruction.  We will be looking for:

  • Individualized Lessons
  • Monitoring participation and performance
  • Recognizing confusion and disengagement
  • Addressing the SEL needs of learners
  • Strategies used to meet the needs of special education and EB learners
If you want any support to achieve these bullets, set up a time with Samira, Alli, Ayesha, Corinne, or Alex.

DYSLEXIA AWARENESS MONTH

October 14th is the day our district will recognize dyslexia awareness by wearing red! The program that CISD uses for MLI is called Take Flight, written by Scottish Rite Hospital.  In MLI, each lesson is presented in a predictable, systematic way where we use our senses to help solidify what we have learned. Using your senses helps make the abstract more concrete by changing sequences into movements.  Below is a chart of letter patterns where hand movements are used to help our learners remember what they are.

RED AND BLACK SUPERSTAR NOMINATIONS OPEN

The nomination period for CEF Superstars is currently open! The deadline for the 1st round of the Super Star program is Friday, December 2, 2022.  The program is designed to give parents and CISD staff an opportunity to recognize the dedicated and hardworking students, teachers, administrators, and support staff within the district. Parent can nominate any CISD staff member at their campus that they would like to be considered for the award.  Student nominations will be submitted by CISD staff.  Awards will be given out twice per year, and the winner names will be ready for announcement starting Friday, December 9.  Link to Nomination Form

RED RIBBON WEEK APPROACHING IN TWO WEEKS
Speaking of RED...we will participate in these Spirit Days the last week in October.   Please let our FamiLEEs know, now, so that they may prepare.

TRUNK OR TREAT COMING SOON
This outdoor event will take place in our back parking lot.  PTO will have a voting station for the "BEST" trunk and a prize will be given.

SAVE THE DATE FOR PTO SPIRIT NIGHT
Don't worry about dinner on the night of Trunk or Treat.  Pick up or order a pizza and support Lee Elementary PTO.

DLC UPDATES

Make words come alive using Keynote animation!  The next time you have new vocabulary to introduce, consider allowing learners to create an animation to show their understanding! Check out this article from the DLC bulb for more details!

Have little learners or animators just starting out? Consider a pre-animated “Making Words” template like these! Bookmark them for winter OR book Alli to help create some fall or content related ones!

ESL UPDATES

Value ALL Language and Literacy. Many teachers will say that they value languages and literacy but how can we quantify that belief in our daily work with students? Actions speak louder than words, right?

  • Learn a few words in students’ primary languages

  • Use students’ primary language(s) on the walls

  • Provide books & resources in L1 when available

  • Encourage translanguaging and the full use of students’ language repertoire

Week of October 3, 2022

THANK YOU ALL FOR ANOTHER AMAZING WEEK AT LEE!  Thank you to Social Spurs for the gift cards for our custodians. Please make time to thank our custodians when you see them.  WHAT A HARD JOB!  You are doing a wonderful job preparing for your learner led conferences.  Thank YOU!

DID YOU KNOW:
  • there is a WONDERFUL resource for parents through the DLC Bulb?  Please share this website with Family Resources to help support parents with their learner's at-home technology.
  • you must turn your Vivatek Boards and televisions off each afternoon?  Please remember to do this to save the life of these learning tools.
  • you can access who is an approved vendor on the Coppell ISD Website?  Go to Departments -> Purchasing -> Approved Vendors.
  • Parents can start joining their learners for lunch on Fridays in October.  Please share this Friday Lunch sign up form in your weekly newsletter for the remainder of the year.  October 14 is our first lunch date.

WORLD DAY OF BULLYING PREVENTION
October is National Bullying Prevention Month and the first Monday of every October is World Day of Bullying Prevention.  On this day students, schools, and communities all over the world go BLUE together against bullying.  We want you and your learners to join us to stop bullying and cyberbullying by wearing a blue shirt on Monday.

COLLEGE SHIRT DAY
Encourage learners to participate the first Wednesday of each month.

SPIRIT RALLY
We will host our Fall Spirit Rally on Wednesday from 2:00-3:00.  Please have learners packed up in your spaces before we call you down over the intercom.  This is a Day 7.

STAFF MEETING WEDNESDAY
We have had quite a few newcomers join Lee Elementary this year.  In order to support you with this growing need and number, Alex and Corinne will lead us through some learning Wednesday afternoon.  3rd and 5th Designers will also get your GT Testing Training afterwards.

EARLY RELEASE ON THURSDAY
Thursday is an early release for students.  Please remind parents and follow the schedule below!  Your duty free lunch and remainder of your conference time are whatever time you need after 12:30, so you may need a snack when your children eat lunch (if you are like me and 12:30 is late for lunch).  Thursday afternoon you can prepare for conferences, host conferences, or use as work time for report cards or other work you need to get done.  Remember 1st 9 week grades are due October 11.

Please send learners to pick up their lunches at these times.  On early release days, learners eat in their houses.
  • Blue- 10:00
  • Yellow- 10:15
  • Green- 10:30
  • Red- 10:45
  • Purple- 11:00

FALL CONFERENCES
Please make sure you are at work during normal contract hours on Friday (7:15-3:35). Document when you personally reach out to parents and they do not attend their Fall Conference.  Panorama is a great place to document.  If you don't document it, it didn't happen and our goal is to have 100% participation in learner-led conferences.  Remember...your space is a reflection of you and the learning that happens there.  While learning can get messy, Conference Day isn't the best day to showcase that!  Please make sure all spaces are on point.  Here is a slide deck and video provided from CISD if you need help explaining BOY Assessment Data to your parents.

RESPECT AGREEMENTS
Next week starts the 2nd 9 weeks.  Please build time in your lesson design, for the week of October 10, to include time to revisit and update your respect agreements with your classes.  New copies should be sent to Leigh Ann and Angel for our discipline binder.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Speaking of a new 9 weeks, remember to review digital citizenzhip with your class.  Revisiting digital citizenship conversations throughout the year helps to keep a healthy digital classroom environment. Each month, Alli will be providing some ideas to keep the conversations going!

Common Sense Media is my “go to” resource as both a parent and an educator supporting children as they navigate the waters of digital learning.  They just announced a partnership with Book Creator Online and are offering 3 guided digital books - FREE!

Click here to view the books and learn more!

Which one will you implement this month? I’d love to see your digital citizens using #rjlyear9!

PARENT SQUARE
Please share this information letter with parents regarding Parent Square.  In addition, here is a Smore from Alex and Corinne for instructions on changing the language settings in ParentSquare.

OCTOBER IS DYSLEXIA AWARENESS MONTH

Each week in October, Melissa and Angela will share videos and information to build our awareness of dyslexia.  Follow Melissa on Twitter to see what learners do in their MLI class. You can also follow the hashtag #coppellMLI to learn more about dyslexia across the district. Do you know what MLI stands for?

ESL STRATEGY OF THE WEEK

Give Daily Writing Opportunities. No matter the subject area you teach, have students write. Writing does not need to be a lengthy process nor must it be a ticket out (though it can be). Writing can include predictions, thoughts, reflections, comparisons, justifications, etc. Writing can also include modeling by you, sentence stems, primary language, and drawing as needed by students.
